Labin – one of the most beautiful and best preserved old towns of Croatia is situated in the east of Istria about 3km from the sea on bank of 320m. Already 2000 years B.C. first human settlements have been on this beautiful spots. Albona – the old name of the town has been first time mentioned 285 years B.C. It is of keltic-illyric origin and means „Town on the hill“ respectively „High settlement“. Titus Livius once wrote that the residents are pirates and corsairs who used the high above situated place as retreat and the many small bays as ambush for their boats..

Today you will find a large variety of small galerys scattered around the old town as well as a multitude of coffe bars and restaurants which invite to stay. The town loggia built in the 16th century offers the opportunity to enjoy the hustle and bustle on the main place at the town hall from a shadowy place..

Well worth seeing is also the town gate and the Town Museum with its archaeological and ethnographical collection. Unique in this part of Europe is the model of a miniature coal mine which you will find in the basement..

An especially nice spot in the administrative center of the region and birthplace of Matthias Flacius Illyricus, a collaborator of Martin Luther, is Fortica. There you will take a breathtaking view on the istrian landscape, the sea and the islands of Cres and Losinj..

You will also see the former fishing village Rabac which is directly situated at the sea and also belongs to the town of Labin. Alongside a small creek with some nice small waterfalls a beautiful footpath leads down from the old town directly to the beach. Once there you can enjoy the clean sea and the various bays which invite for swimming..
